Kosiv Ceramics

Taras Shevchenko Museum will display Kosiv Ceramics exhibition in the Runnymede Branch of Toronto Public Library from September 1 to 30, 2013.

At the foot of the Carpathian Mountains in Ukraine there is a nice city – Kosiv, which surroundings are rich in clay. Pottery has been developing there since ancient times. Artisans have produced pots, jugs, bowls, and mugs – all the necessary home equipment. Crafts the way we know them today emerged in the late 18th century and now have become a unique phenomenon of Hutsul Ceramics. Pottery was decorated with pictures of various kinds: stylized images of flowers, trees, animals (horses, deer, bears, birds), of various human types (hunters, warriors, postmen, musicians, etc.) and of Saints (often St. George and St. Nicholas). Kosiv ceramics is an important part of the Ukrainian national art, which is well known and highly-valued all over the world.
