Unveiling a plaque honouring William Harasym

On February 4, 2018, the Taras Shevchenko Museum unveils a plaque honouring William Harasym, former director and dedicated volunteer, who passed away on January 26, 2017.

In 1995, with the relocation of the Shevchenko Museum to Toronto, Bill became actively involved in directing the work of the Museum Board - applying his energy and practical skills to improvement and maintenance of the building as well as to curation of collections and exhibits.

As President and long-time volunteer, for almost 20 years he tirelessly welcomed and educated the public.  An inspiration to the board members, visitors, friends and supporters and a driving force behind the success of the Museum, over the years, Bill generously shared his vision while always remaining true to his principles of honesty, fairness and compassion.

A veritable fount of knowledge about our history and culture, and a role model for leadership, Bill was a generous donor, humanist, mentor, wise advisor and good friend. A passionate admirer of Taras Shevchenko, he devoted his time and energy to spreading the word about the Great Bard of Ukraine’s fascinating life and works, thereby sensitizing people to the universal struggle for personal, social and national freedom.  Additionally, he generously shared with the public, countless stories about the thousands of early Ukrainian pioneers who immigrated to Canada in search of a better life.

Bill’s memory will live on within the walls of this Museum to which he dedicated his passion, enthusiasm, expertise, and knowledge.  And he will always live on in our hearts.
